Today's lesson - Black Love|
Love 💕, Basketball 🏀, Fame 💫 , and Family over everything!
As Debbie Allen's charater Lydia Grant said on Fame, "You've got big dreams? You want fame? Well, fame costs. And right here's where you start paying in sweat."
For the purposes of this blog, let's exchange the word "fame" for "marriage. As Pastor Calvin Robinson says on Married At First Sight, "Marriage is not for punks!" A happy marriage is what you DREAM of, but making a marriage work requires you put in the work!
In today's blog, we are giving a standing ovation to the love of Debbie Allen and Norm Nixon for their love, sweat, and work to thrive for 37 years!
Their Love. They may have met on the 1979 film The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh, but we aren't sure that was their first meeting. They had a modest wedding - far from the traditional fanfare that goes along with being a star. In fact, she was went into premature labor with their first child just before their wedding. They have a quiet love. You won't read much about their relationship. Every once in a while, you'll catch a video of them dancing, an image of them kissing, or a post professing their love.
The Basketball. Norm Nixon is a retired NBA star who was well into his career when he married Debbie Allen.
The Fame. Debbie, a trained dancer, was well into her role musical-drama television series, "Fame" when she married Norm.
The Family. The reason why their love is quiet is because they focused all of their attention inward. They poured their love into their family over everything else.
With Debbie winning multiple awards and Norm reaching career highs, they never lost their focus.
And the kind of love that puts in the work, sustains itself, and celebrates their wins should be celebrated everyday! Thank you Debbie and Norm for allowing us to a peak into your love!
